HDFC Bank has made a strategic investment in Bengaluru‑based conversational AI startup CoRover, the developer of BharatGPT—marking the first time a leading private sector bank in India has backed a generative AI model developer. The companies have not disclosed the investment amoun.

CoRover is the creator of BharatGPT, a sovereign, enterprise‑grade large language model (LLM) designed and built in India. The platform supports multiple Indian languages and is multilingual, multimodal, and domain‑adaptable. CoRover has reportedly served over 1 billion users and is trusted by more than 25,000 enterprises and developers.

The partnership aligns with HDFC Bank’s growing interest in integrating advanced AI capabilities into its operations, as well as its focus on enhancing linguistic inclusivity across India’s diverse user base. CoRover’s BharatGPT platform enables deployment of AI-driven conversational tools—including chatbots, voicebots, videobots, and telephony AI solutions—on web, mobile, WhatsApp, and contact center systems.

Notably, CoRover recently launched BharatGPT Mini, a compact version of its model that can operate on low‑end devices and even in the absence of an internet connection. This expands AI accessibility to users in infrastructure‑limited environments.

This investment by HDFC Bank stands as a signal of confidence in India’s generative AI sector, which is witnessing rapid growth—GenAI startups in the country have raised $524 million in the first seven months of 2025, reaching a five‑year high.
